September 17th marks a great milestone for my son Wolf Wigo, as he will be inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.

While Wolf’s water polo career is prodigious, as a three-time Olympian and two-time NCAA champion, it wasn’t easy. A high school without a swimming pool and severely damaged back, were just a few of the obstacles between Wolf and his goal to join the U.S. Men’s Olympic Water Polo team. His journey to overcome these hurdles and rise to a legendary status in the world of water polo were told in our documentary, Beneath the Surface. After retiring from playing in international competition, Wolf has gone on to continue his career in the world of water polo. He is currently the Director of Water Polo for UC Santa Barbara and also serves as a color commentator for NBC Olympics, most recently at the 2008 Olympic Games.

We are so proud of Wolf’s accomplishments. His determination, commitment and generosity toward the water polo community are truly worthy of celebration.

San Diego, CA – May 22 – A year after falling to the Olympic Club in the Fisher Cup championship match the New York Athletic Club earned redemption with a 13-7 win over the Olympic Club earlier today at UC-San Diego. Behind three goals from John Mann and 10 saves from Merrill Moses the New York Athletic Club was able to shrug off an early deficit and rally to take a commanding victory. Peter Varellas led the scoring attack for the Olympic Club with two goals while Nick Ellis went the distance in net posting 8 saves.

The Olympic Club struck first as Varellas scored just under two minutes into the match for a 1-0 advantage. That was countered some 20 seconds later when Janson Wigo got New York on the board with a score and a 1-1 match. The two teams would trade goals over the next several minutes before Layne Beaubien would find the cage to put New York up 4-3 going to the second period.

In the second quarter the Olympic Club got even thanks to Brian Dudley hitting for a score and a 4-4 match at the 4:26 mark. Fast forward to 1:11 remaining in the period and again New York would go ahead this time on a score from Scott Davidson to make it a 5-4 lead going into halftime.

The third quarter saw NYAC build their lead. Up just one score they came looking for more and started with a score from Jesse Smith to go up 6-4 at the 6:29 mark. Then with 3:35 left in the period JW Krumpholz powered home a goal for a 7-4 lead, which was followed less than a minute later by Beaubien hitting again for an 8-4 advantage.

That was the score going to the fourth and the Olympic Club would look to rally with an early goal from Brian Alexander to cut the deficit to 8-5. That was short lived as NYAC then ran off four straight goals from the likes of Matt Sagehorn, Janson Wigo, and two straight from John Mann for a 12-5 lead. The Olympic Club got one back from Sage Wright at the 2:24 mark but it was too little too late at that point. New York went back inside to Mann who delivered his third of the period for a 13-6 lead. A late goal from Michael Sharf from on a penalty shot proved to not factor in the outcome and New York came out victorious 13-7.

In earlier action the USA Men’s Junior National Team capped a solid showing at the tourney taking third place with a 9-7 win over Newport Water Polo Foundation. In fifth place Lamorinda Gold topped LA Water Polo 13-10 while UCLA took seventh place with an 11-9 win over Santa Barbara. In ninth place Trojan downed Lamorinda Blue 12-10 and Stanford took 11th place with a 10-8 victory over Newport Water Polo Foundation “B.” 13th place went to the Sharks with an 18-10 win over Tigers and host UC-San Diego took 15th place with a 10-8 win over Long Beach. The snow is finally gone and the weather is starting to turn around. Summer feels like it’s right around the corner, which means pools and beaches will soon become the best way to beat the New York heat. Don’t let a fear of swimming or a lack of confidence keep your kids from enjoying the thrill of gliding across a pool. There is a wonderful not-for-profit in New York that is working to give kids the necessary skills for swimming success.

Since 2006 the Swim Strong Foundation has been helping New York kids discover the joy and success of competitive swimming.

www.theswimstrongfoundation.org

Swim Strong offers both competitive and developmental programs to teach kids how to swim as well as help them improve their skills for competition.

Swim Strong teaches the proper techniques to prepare your child to be a strong, safe and competent swimmer.  We want them to enjoy the sport for a lifetime.  We work with children who are in the very beginning level as well as those who are already competing but need stroke enhancement work.

Find out all the details on the SSF Programs here.

In December, Swim Strong founder Shawn Selvin was named New Yorker of the Week by NY1 – check out the video piece below:

 Dutch players face attempted murder

Friday 09 October 2009

Two sisters are facing community service for attempting to

murder another girl during a water polo match.

The girls, aged 22 and 16, are said to have held an opponent

under water for so long she almost drowned, shortly after

she scored a goal.

The victim is said to suffer from post traumatic stress and

has been unable to work for six months.

The sisters were suspended from the club immediately after

the incident.

A spokesman for the public prosecution department told news

agency ANP it would be wrong if serious crimes commited at

sports centres were not prosecuted. The older girl faces 240

hours of community service, the younger one 180 hours.

And The Winner Is…

After two weeks of intense athleticism, the 2009 FINA Games in Rome have come to a close. Both the men’s and the women’s teams put their all into the game, fighting for their place in the water polo world.

And the results are in…

Women’s Water Polo

  • GOLD – USA!!!
  • Silver – Canada
  • Bronze – Russia

Men’s Water Polo

  • GOLD – Serbia
  • Silver – Spain
  • Bronze – Croatia

The final games were close, especially for the women. Greece was knocked out of medal contention by Russia in a close 10-9 game. Likewise, the women’s gold medal match was equally tight, team USA triumphing 7-6 over Canada, giving the USA women the Gold! The men, on the other hand, had a slightly different go. In the Bronze-medal match between Croatia and USA, Croatia ultimately prevailed 8-6. Although the USA men did not come home with a medal, the fact that they came so close speaks to their prowess in the pool. The men’s Gold-medal match was fierce, Serbia claiming the title of world champion with a one-point win over Spain 14-13.

Congratulations to the USA women’s team and the Serbian men’s team for their success at the 2009 FINA Games!

Going for the Gold!

Before the FINA World Championship games even began, the USA women’s team was called the team to beat.

They still are.

In a 8-7 win over Greece yesterday, the USA women’s team came out of the semi-finals victorious!  With a lead starting in the first 25 minutes, the team USA women raised the bar another 90 seconds later, with a 2-0 lead over Greece.  The United States’ team maintained the lead over Greece throughout the game until the fourth quarter when Greece tied them, 6-6.  Team USA fought back, leading with a two point advantage, until Greece scored once more with 43 seconds left on the clock.  The remaining minute of the game was favorable to the United States, maintaining their lead, winning the game, and advancing to the Finals!

Impressive plays were made by Brenda Villa, Alison Gregorka, and Kelly Rulon, each scoring one goal, and Elsie Winders with an incredible five goals!  Meanwhile, Betsey Armstrong guarded the goal preserving her team’s lead.  USA coach Adam Krikorian proudly commented to a Palo Alto reporter, “Today is a perfect example of how much depth we have on our team and how difficult it is for other teams to prepare for us.  We can win and beat you in many different ways with many different people.  Elsie had zero goals coming in an had five goals and that’s just an example of the strength of our team.”

What next?  Why, the gold medal match against Canada on Friday, of course! While this is the USA women’s fourth gold medal match, it is Canada’s first gold medal experience since 1991.  Who will come out victorious?  Check out Universal Sports for all the latest on the games.  Good luck team USA!

USA’s been doing just fine at FINA!

The USA women’s team’s quarterfinal win over Spain pushed them into the semi-finals – now team USA is still strong and in medal contention!  Watch the USA women’s team battle Greece LIVE today at 2:40 p.m. on UniversalSports.com.

In the tenth day of the games, the men’s team defeated Germany 8-5 in the quarterfinals, moving them along to the semi-finals.  Not only did they prevail with 8 scores, but their winning shots were made by 8 different players, speaking to the strength of the whole team!  If you missed the game, or want to watch it again, check out video of the game by clicking here.  Check out LIVE coverage of the men’s semi-final games tomorrow on Universal Sports!

USA beat Italy, in their very own Rome, at the FINA World Water Polo Championships last night!

The USA gained advantage in the first quarter, and maintained this advantage throughout the game.  Early in the fourth, Italy fought back, tying the game at 6-6.  Tensions rose in the last 7 seconds of the game, after the USA gained a 3 point advantage, for Italy fought back with a clear shot, bringing the score from 9-7 to 9-8, but it wasn’t quite the score they needed.  The nail-biting game came to a close, with USA championing a 9-8 win over Italy.

Merrill Moses blocked Italy’s penalty shot in the second quarter, ensuring that USA stayed in the lead, and by the end of the game had made 9 saves contributing to the USA’s success!  Peter Varellas and Jesse Smith both scored one each, while Layne Beaubien scored a whopping three goals (what a hat-trick!) and Tony Azevedo, an amazing four goals!

The Championship has just begun, so make sure you tune into NBC Universal again tomorrow to watch the games go on with USA against Macedonia, Wednesday at 10:40 am!

The next time someone tells you that swimming really is the best sport, fight the urge to roll your eyes or blurt, “Yeah, right,” because swimming is the super sport.  For one, swimming is an aerobic sport, employing multiple muscle groups throughout the workout. Additionally, swimming is a low-impact sport.  Unlike running or land-based sports which (thanks to gravity) are high impact sports, with swimming you reap all the benefits of a full workout without risking typical sports injuries.  Swimming is widely considered a healing activity for this reason as well, many physical therapists urging injured dancers, athletes, and average Joe’s to dive in, maintaining their overall strength and stamina, while the injury heals.

So, how does one incorporate swimming into their routine?  Grab your bathing suit, a towel, and some goggles and head out to a pool near you.  Don’t have a gym membership?  No sweat.  Check out community centers in your area, university swim centers, or even town pools in your area which often have swim memberships available at reasonable prices.  Then try out these exercise routines, courtesy of Toby Huseman:
